REINDEER HOT DOGS FOR SALE
Anchorage is currently engrossed in an anual winter festival called the "Fur Rondy" (short for rendezvous) which commemorates Alaska's long-standing tradition in the mining & fur trades. Included in many unusual events are "running of the reindeer" (a pharse version of the bulls in Spain), a full-blown carnival with stands & rides in the snow, snowshoe softball, and a three-part dog sled race.
Between some of Kim's dog drops on Sunday we were able to see the last leg of that race start...it was exciting for all of us knowing that in one week we'd be the ones in the chute, none moreso than Kim who said it definately kicked-up her nerves a few notches!
On Monday while Kim & her more devoted handlers (I'm feeling guilty here) tended to practical needs like vet checks for all 18 dogs and cleaning out the dog boxes in the truck (incuding replenishing all the straw bedding) - I hit the road for the scenery of a lifetime!!
We drove south to the Kenai Peninsula - through mountains & glaciers - and the only thing more beautiful that I've ever seen in nature was my own newborn child. I was literally speechless and actually crying at the majesty of all the white that sourrounded us! This was no Pulaski Skyway (although that can bring tears to the eyes too).
Aside from a pit-stop at a great wildlife refuge, our "real' sightings so far include: 2 moose, 5 American bald eagles; many seals and otters; and gorgeous birds we can't identify.
